Report launch: Alcohol sponsorship of football

Report launch: Alcohol sponsorship of football

Join Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) and researchers from the University of Stirling on Tuesday 29 November 11:00 - 12:00pm GMT for the launch of a report: Alcohol sponsorship of football: Examining the nature of sponsorship relations for professional football teams across countries with varied restrictions on alcohol marketing’ by Dr. Richard I. Purves, Nathan Critchlow and Amber Morgan.

It is well established that exposure to alcohol marketing is causally associated with the initiation of drinking, an increase in alcohol consumption (including binge drinking), and there is also evidence of an increased risk of relapse (for people in recovery).

Sports fans in Scotland are exposed to high levels of alcohol marketing at football and other sporting events, both in person and via broadcast – influencing how much and how often they drink alcohol.

The event will feature a presentation of our report findings, discussion of the wider context of alcohol sports sponsorship, and provide an overview of our upcoming campaign relating to alcohol sports sponsorship in Scotland.
