On 15 February 2021, SHAAP wrote to the Chancellor of the Exchequer with a call to increase alcohol duty by 2% above inflation, ahead of the Budget.

In support of the call by the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, of which SHAAP is a member, Lindsay Paterson (SHAAP Interim Director) and Dr Alastair MacGilchrist (SHAAP Chair) wrote to the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, urging him to increase alcohol duty by 2% above inflation at this year's Budget.

"Ahead of the Budget in March, we are writing to urge you to increase alcohol duty by 2% above inflation. This step would significantly reduce alcohol-related harm and save money for our public services, whilst generating additional revenue."

SHAAP also reminded the Chancellor of SHAAP's submission to the alcohol duty review consultation. We want a simpler, fairer system which is proportionate, consistent, scaled and regularly uprated.
